Nexgard Spectra Small Dog Dosage Guidelines

By the Easy Protect Team!

When it comes to our dog's health and well-being, there's no room for compromise.

As responsible Aussie pet owners, we must always prioritise their health, happiness, and safety above all else. That's why it's essential to be well-informed about the products and treatments we use (even those over the counter) to protect our furry friends.

In this pursuit, one name leads the way, recommended by Vets all over Australia, as a reliable solution for safeguarding small dogs against a myriad of parasites. that is Nexgard Spectra.

Nexgard Spectra is a veterinary-recommended, all-in-one parasitic preventive treatment that we deliver with Easy Protect, a monthly delivery that makes Nexgard Spectra even easier. In this article, we explore the world of Nexgard Spectra for small dogs, delving into what it is, how it works, and most importantly, the dosage guidelines that are crucial to follow.

Understanding Nexgard Spectra

Before jumping into Nexgard Spectra for your small dogs, it's good to get an understanding of Nexgard Spectra itself and how it works.

What is Nexgard Spectra?

In Australia, Nexgard Spectra is an over the counter, broad-spectrum chewable tablet that helps protect dogs from a variety of parasites, including fleas, ticks (including deadly paralysis ticks), heartworm, and intestinal worms. It's Australia's leading monthly chew, recommended by most Aussie veterinarians.

How does Nexgard Spectra work?

Nexgard Spectra works by targeting and killing fleas, ticks, and various types of worms in dogs. It contains two active ingredients, Afoxolaner and Milbemycin Oxime. Afoxolaner kills fleas and ticks by interfering with their nervous system, effectively paralysing and eliminating them.

Milbemycin Oxime targets different types of worms, including heartworms and intestinal worms, disrupting their nerve signals and muscle function. This combination provides broad-spectrum protection against common parasites, helping to keep your dog healthy and free from infestations.

Benefits of using Nexgard Spectra for small dogs

The benefits of using Nexgard Spectra for small dogs include:

  • Effective oral treatment against a wide range of Aussie parasites

  • Convenience in a single, easy-to-administer chew

  • Peace of mind for pet owners

Knowing your furbaby has protection against fleas, ticks, heartworm, and more is rather important in Australia. Over 1,000 dogs a week go to Vets for parasites. That's why our Vet Dr Tegan helped start Easy Protect!

Factors Affecting Dosage

What weight options does Nexgard Spectra for small dogs come in?

Nexgard Spectra Orange: 2kg - 3.5Kgs, is the smallest weight pack Nexgard Spectra comes in, and is suitable for very small dogs and puppies weighing between

Nexgard Spectra Yellow: 3.6kg - 7.5kg, is the next size up, and is suitable for dogs and puppies between.

Handy Tip: Knowing your dogs weight is essential of course, so if in doubt, there is a neat way to weigh them. First weigh yourself on your scales. Then weigh yourself and your dog together. You dog's weight is your combined weight minus your weight. If you dog is right on the limit of pack sizes, we would suggest calling your Vet to see what they recommend.

What age should my dog be before using Nexgard Spectra?

You can typically start giving your dog Nexgard Spectra at 8 weeks of age. It's important to consult with your veterinarian before starting any medication, as they can provide specific guidance based on your dog's breed, weight, and health status.

They will help ensure that Nexgard Spectra is appropriate and safe for your puppy and provide you with the correct dosage instructions. You can then shop around, and even use a handy service like Easy Protect to ensure your puppy is protected year-round.

What if my small dog has existing health conditions?

With any new treatment, supplement, preventions etc. always consult your Vet!

Like humans, every dog is different, and you need to make sure your Vet gives you the approval before using Nexgard Spectra, or any other treatments or supplements.

Dosage Guidelines for Small Dogs

How often do I give my small dog Nexgard Spectra?

In general, Nexgard Spectra is given once a month (i.e. 15th of every month) to provide protection against a range of parasites, including fleas, ticks, heartworm, and intestinal worms. It is however, crucial to follow your vet's advice and the instructions provided on the product label. Your Vet may recommend a particular dosing schedule that suits your dog's health, lifestyle, and the local prevalence of parasites.

What are the initial and maintenance Nexgard Spectra dosages?

These initial and maintenance dosages are the same, choose the Nexgard Spectra pack that is right for your small dog's weight, and dose them once a month unless your Vet recommends otherwise.

How do I administer Nexgard Spectra?

The administration instructions for Nexgard Spectra are relatively straightforward. Here are the key steps:

  1. Choose the Right Dosage: Ensure you have the correct Nexgard Spectra product for your dog's size. It comes in various sizes for different weight ranges, so be sure to select the appropriate one.

  2. Administer with or without Food: Nexgard Spectra can be given with or without food, so it's flexible in terms of mealtime.

  3. One Tablet, Once a Month: The standard dosing frequency for Nexgard Spectra is once a month. You should give your dog one tablet per month, ideally on the same date each month.

  4. Watch Your Dog: Ensure your dog swallows the tablet. You can give it directly by placing it in their mouth or hide it in their food. Make sure they eat the entire dose.

  5. Observe Your Dog: Keep an eye on your dog for a little while after administration to make sure they don't spit out the tablet.

  6. Regular Usage: For continuous protection, continue administering Nexgard Spectra every month.

  7. Consult Your Veterinarian: Always consult your veterinarian for specific dosage recommendations, especially if your dog has underlying health conditions or is taking other medications.

Remember, it's crucial to follow the Nexgard Spectra  administration instructions carefully (provided in your Easy Protect pack) to ensure that your small dog receives the intended protection against fleas, ticks, heartworm, and other parasites. If you have any doubts or concerns, don't hesitate to consult your veterinarian or the product's packaging for more details.

Any tips for ensuring my small dog takes the full dose?

Most dogs enjoy the beef flavoured palatable chew. However if you've fussy dogs like we do, you may need to pull out a few tricks.

The easiest way is to hide the dose/chew in their food. If that fails, try wrapping it or pushing it into a piece of cheese. Cheese is okay for dogs in very small quantities, so don't over do it, perhaps save it as a monthly treat when their Nexgard Spectra is due!

What do I do if I miss a Nexgard Spectra dose?

If you've missed a dose of Nexgard Spectra for your dog, don't panic, but it's important to take some steps to ensure your pet's continued protection:

  1. Administer the Missed Dose: If you remember within a day or so, give the missed dose as soon as you can. Then, continue with the regular dosing schedule, i.e. if you missed the 15th, and remembered on the 18th, then your dogs new dose is the 18th of each month.

  2. Do Not Double Dose: Do not give your dog two doses at once to make up for the missed one. This can lead to an overdose and potential side effects.

  3. Monitor Your Dog: Keep an eye on your dog for any signs of fleas, ticks, or other parasites. If you notice any issues, contact your vet.

  4. Prevent Future Missed Doses: The easiest way to do this, is to use a service like Easy Protect, where your dog's Nexgard Spectra is delivered monthly, so you have the perfect physical reminder. Thousands of Aussie dog owners love the service and you will too if you're a little forgettful.

Remember that the actions to take can vary depending on the specific circumstances and the medication's instructions. Always consult your veterinarian for the most accurate and personalized guidance in case of a missed dose.

Monitoring and Adapting Nexgard Spectra Dosages

Signs your small dog's dosage may need adjusting

The only real signs as to if your dog's Nexgard Spectra dosage size would need to be changed, are if your dog gains or loses weight.

The beauty of a monthly delivery like Easy Protect, especially for puppies, is that it's delivered monthly. So if your dog gains weight, you are not stuck with a 6-pack of Nexgard Spectra that is the wrong dosage size.

Nexgard Spectra for small dogs is even easier on a service like Easy Protect for small dogs where it's delivered monthly so you never forget, run out or worry!

Ensuring your small dog has your Vet's approval is the first step.
